Is anyone else having problems with the 2nd row or the big square? I find I have a chain of 9 from the first row, then on the second row I sc in the 2nd ch,(which leaves me 7) I then put 1 sc in the next 6 ch, which only leaves me 1ch left for my first dc!! This stitch really isn't 'tall' enough to form the first dc of the filled square.
What am I missing?

It will come out right, Each dc is as long as 3 chains.
you said, you have only one chain left of the ch-9, that's correct.
The one last ch = 1
+ the chain before you placed the last sc into = 1
+ the hight of the sc = 1
__________________
= 3 chains
