I am very new to crocheting and just learned the slip stitch and single chain. I must be doing something wrong because as I crochet, my piece seems to be getting smaller and smaller and it looks like a pyramid. What am I doing wrong?

Hi, Jill,

I had the same problem. I think you are skipping stitches when you turn your work. It's very easy to do. You need to keep track of how many stitches should be in each row, and then make certain that each row has that number. That way you won't get a pyramid. Sometimes your pattern will tell you to skip one or more chains when you turn, so your number of stitches might not always match the number of chains you started with--but it will be close.
Good luck! Viv

Thanks Viv, I think I figured out the problem. I went onto a website on Youtube and saw someone turn their work and do a single crochet and then continue to do a double crochet. does this sound right?

Jill, are you using a pattern, or doing your own design? If you have a pattern, it should tell you how many to skip when you turn your work. If you're doing it on your own, I don't know about using a single crochet, then following it with a double. I guess I'm not experienced enough to know if that will work. But if the video showed it that way, you might as well give it a try!

Maybe someone else will weigh in here on this topic.

Jill, no one else has responded. I'm going to see if I can find an answer for you elsewhere.
