short rows at beginning edge

I'm still plugging away at the Little Hearts doily and have made it to the short rows at the beginning edge. If I just put the hook through the single remaining loop it pulls out too large. I've tried working the hook into the bottom of the stitch on the base row which works better but is very tedious and I'm not getting into the same space each stitch. Ideas? Suggestions?

Hi PL,

As far as I can tell from your letter, you are crocheting too loose. Try to crochet with more tension or try a smaller hook, that may solve the problem.

Hope that helps
Hardy!

Too late for that now! The starting chain is what it is, I'll have to work around as I described. With yarn the suggestion is always to make the starting chain loose.
